Maui 's Best Kept Secret: The Best Municipal Golf Course In America. Okay, Waiehu Golf Course hasn't officially been designated the BEST municipal golf course in America, but those who've played its rolling links-style fairways generally agree that it is one of the most scenic and challenging golf courses they've played. And, at a visitor rate of $26.00 (including cart fee) it is certainly the least expensive Maui golf course. This 18 hole Par 72 course plays 6,330 yards from the blue tees, and offers golfers dramatic ocean views on each of the front nine holes ... The Pacific Ocean playing its role as the world's largest water hazard on holes 5-8. The Back 9 also offers incredible views of the Maui coastline, along with equally inspiring views of the West Maui mountains. A personal favorite, and one of the most challenging holes is the 239 yard, Par 3 fifth hole. Teeing off from an elevated tee box perched upon a cliff, your golf ball flirts with disaster as it navigates its way towards the distant green, influenced by the prevalent and usually strong trade winds. Par is considered a very good score on this hole, in fact, it plays as a Par 4 for the women.
One of the best things about Waiehu Golf Course, is its the only Maui course that allows you to walk the course. Golf carts are available of course, but a $2 push cart can be rented if you're looking for a little exercise. Waiehu Golf Course is located 10 minutes North of Kahului on Highway 340.
